Dr. Denielle Perry is the Director of the Free-flowing Rivers Lab at Northern Arizona University's School of Earth and Sustainability. She holds a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Oregon and specializes in political ecology, river conservation, and climate adaptation policies. Her work emphasizes re-Indigenizing water governance and explores the intersection of conservation, development, and Indigenous rights. Perry leads initiatives like the NSF-RCN-UBE-RIVER network and serves in leadership roles with the Association of Pacific Coast Geographers, American Association of Geographers, and IUCN's Freshwater Specialists Group.
Her research spans fieldwork across the Americas, Europe, and Asia, focusing on riverine ecosystems, dam impacts, and policy efficacy. Perry has advised the River Studies and Leadership Certificate program and mentored over 15 students across PhD, Master’s, and undergraduate levels. She co-authored influential publications on river protection policies, hydropower governance, and Indigenous rights in energy projects. Her expertise as an international river guide and Swiftwater Rescue Technician informs her advocacy for practical, community-driven environmental solutions.
Perry's lab collaborates with global organizations to advance free-flowing river protections and sustainable water management. Her recent work includes analyzing groundwater contributions to the Colorado River and developing frameworks for equitable water governance in tribal lands. She actively bridges academic research with policy through white papers, legislative consultations, and public outreach.
