Dr. Demosthenes Kivotides is a Senior Lecturer in Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Strathclyde's Faculty of Engineering. His research focuses on Vortex Dynamical Turbulence, encompassing superfluids, plasmas, and incompressible flows. He holds a PhD from RWTH Aachen University, an MASt from the University of Cambridge, an MSc from Stanford University, and an MEng from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Prior to his current role, he has held positions at institutions including Caltech, UCSB, Imperial College London, and Aalto University.
His work explores nonlinear, statistical, and computational physics, with notable contributions to superfluid helium-4 vortex dynamics and gravitomagnetic effects on turbulence. A co-investigator on the EPSRC-funded Doctoral Training Partnership (2015–2020), he supervises doctoral candidates and collaborates on projects bridging fundamental theory and societal impact. Research outputs include animations and talks available on YouTube.
Key research areas:
- Quantum turbulence and vortex filament behavior
- Superfluid-normal fluid interactions
- High Reynolds number phenomena
- Magnetohydrodynamic interactions
