Demetra Loizou

Demetra Loizou is a Lecturer in International Criminal Law and Humanitarian Law at the School of Law, University of Central Lancashire, Cyprus, since 2018. She serves as LLM Course Leader and Deputy Course Leader, teaching courses such as International Criminal Law and Security, and Transnational Regulation of Terrorism. She holds a PhD in Law from SOAS, University of London (2017), an LL.M from the University of Edinburgh (2006), and a LL.B from the University of Bristol (2005).

Her research focuses on International Criminal Law (with ICC specialization), International Humanitarian Law, Human Rights Law, and Public International Law. She has published widely on topics like ICC jurisprudence, child soldiers, and cyber challenges in legal systems. Her work includes analyses of the Cypriot court system during the pandemic and anti-trafficking strategies.

Key awards include the 2023 Higher Education Academy Fellowship and Cyprus Bar qualification (2008). She has secured research grants like the EU-funded En4s project (2019-2021) and contributed to anti-trafficking studies via the British Institute of International and Comparative Law. She advises on legal compliance, human rights monitoring, and governance through consultancy roles with organizations like Milieu Law and the Commissioner for Administration in Cyprus.

Administrative roles include membership in the Research and Innovation Committee and Senate. She supervises PhD candidates and student projects, notably co-supervising Fezile Ozum’s work on sexual violence in conflict zones. Her outreach includes academic coordination of the UCLan Law Blog and presentations at institutions like SOAS and the University of Cyprus.
