Deirdre Russell is a Lecturer in Film Studies at the University of South Wales, Faculty of Business and Creative Industries, and a member of the Creative Industries Research and Innovation Group. She teaches courses spanning film analysis, documentary theory, and first-person filmmaking.

Her research focuses on autobiographical/first-person filmmaking across fictional, documentary, experimental, and animated forms, as well as cinematic hybridity (documentary/fiction, live-action/animation, intermediality/transmedia). She explores the evolving role of cinema in the digital age.
Recent publications include analyses of identity models in autobiographical films (2023), spatial narratives in digital-age cinema (2018), and comparative studies of Pasolini and Fassbinder (2010).
