Deepa Butoliya

Deepa Butoliya is an Assistant Professor at Carnegie Mellon University's School of Design, College of Fine Arts. She holds a Ph.D. in Design from Carnegie Mellon, an MFA in Industrial Design from the University of Illinois at Chicago, an MDes from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, and a B.Arch from Priyadarshini College of Engineering and Architecture.

Her research focuses on critical design practices from global south perspectives, particularly the concept of Jugaad (improvised solutions under constraints). She has co-curated international exhibitions like Motown Masala: Jugaad in the D and organized symposia on speculative and critical design. She actively presents at conferences such as IDSA, EPIC, CHI, and IASDR.

Deepa integrates technical and artistic approaches, with professional experience spanning architecture, industrial design, and user experience research at organizations like GE Healthcare's Next Generation Imaging Group. She has taught design courses at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Illinois at Chicago.
