Deep Chatterjee

Deep Chatterjee is a Research Scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), working with the MIT Kavli Institute, the LIGO Laboratory, and the A3D3 Institute. He is actively involved in gravitational-wave astronomy and astrophysics research as a member of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration since 2016.

His educational background includes an integrated masters in physics from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Kolkata (2015) and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (2020). Prior to joining MIT in 2022, he was a Survey Science postdoctoral fellow at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Dr. Chatterjee's research focuses on the emerging field of multi-messenger astronomy with gravitational waves. His work centers on studying mergers of compact objects like black holes and neutron stars, which provide insights from fundamental physics to cosmology when observed through multiple channels including gravitational waves, visible and infrared light, and high-energy radiation. His research methodology involves data analysis, high-performance computing, and applying machine learning techniques to advance multi-messenger astrophysics. Within the LIGO collaboration, he contributes to real-time operations of the LIGO/Virgo detector network.

His technical expertise spans gravitational wave detection, strong gravity & gravitational radiation, neutron star physics, and gravitational-wave cosmology. He has also worked with the iPTF/ZTF collaboration on time-domain astronomy and was part of the Dark Energy Science Collaboration of the Rubin Observatory.
