Debra Nestel is a Professor of Simulation Education in Healthcare at Monash University and Professor of Surgical Education at the University of Melbourne's Department of Surgery. She leads national programs like NHET-Sim and the Simulated Patient Network, and edits journals such as Advances in Simulation and BMJ STEL. Her expertise spans healthcare simulation, surgical education, and palliative care innovation.
She holds dual academic appointments and oversees graduate programs including the Master of Surgical Education and the Graduate Certificate in Clinical Simulation. Her research focuses on improving healthcare education through simulation, particularly in geriatric scenarios, interprofessional collaboration, and palliative care delivery via telehealth.
Key projects include the IMPETUS-D dementia simulation training and the IMPART trial for aged care palliative care. She has authored over 200 peer-reviewed papers and edited major works on simulated patient methodology and healthcare simulation research.
Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health equity and quality education (SDGs 3 and 4). She actively supervises PhD students and advocates for ethical simulated participant practices.
