Dr Debra Benita Shaw is a Senior Lecturer in Cultural Theory at the University of East London (UEL), affiliated with the School of Architecture, Computing and Engineering. She teaches history and theory on undergraduate and postgraduate Fine Art and Photography programmes and administers UEL's Professional Doctorate in Fine Art. Her research focuses on critical posthumanism, urban studies, science fiction, and contemporary art & curation, with a particular emphasis on the politics of home and neoliberal family structures.
Shaw earned a PhD in English Literature from the University of East Anglia (1995). Her work spans the cultural study of science and technology, feminism, and critical posthumanism, and is widely cited in international journals and edited collections. She organizes the annual seminar series Culture, Power & Politics with Jeremy Gilbert and serves on editorial boards for New Formations, Science as Culture, and the Critical Posthumanisms book series.
Her publications from 2008–2023 include foundational works like Technoculture: The Key Concepts (2009) and Posthuman Urbanism (2018). Her research explores intersections of posthumanism, urban imaginaries, and technocultural narratives in film and literature.
Shaw is recognized internationally for her expertise in science fiction criticism, posthumanist theory, and urban studies, with recent work addressing space migration, digital aesthetics, and neoliberal housing. She supervises PhD and Professional Doctorate candidates to completion.
