Dr Deborah van der Plaat is a Senior Research Fellow at the School of Architecture, Design and Planning, University of Queensland. She previously managed the Architecture Theory Criticism History Research Centre (ATCH) and focuses on 19th-20th century architecture, intersecting with climate, race, and colonial history. Her work centers on Queensland architectural history, notably through the Digital Archive of Queensland Architecture (DAQA) and publications like Karl Langer: Modern Architect and Migrant in Tropical Australia.
Education: PhD in Architectural History and Theory from the University of New South Wales.
Research Interests: Climatic design in tropical contexts, racial and colonial influences on architecture, oral history methods, and Queensland modernism. Key projects include the ARC-funded 'Architectural Practice in Post-war Queensland' and the exhibition Hot Modernism: Building Modern Queensland 1945-1975.
Awards: 2017 John Herbert Memorial Award, Gold Heritage Award, and grants from the Graham Foundation and ASEH.
Grants/Projects: Led major grants on Queensland architectural history, including collaborations with industry partners like State Library of Queensland. Co-edited five books and served as editor for Fabrications journal.
