Deborah Shaw is a Professor of Film and Screen Studies at the University of Portsmouth, affiliated with the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries and the School of Film, Media and Creative Technologies. She serves as a PhD Supervisor and Research Lead, focusing on transnational film theory, Latin American cinema, gender and sexuality in screen media, and migration narratives in film.

Her research includes analyzing Unorthodox (2020) and Sense8 (2021) through cosmopolitan and transnational lenses, alongside exploring feminist responses to sexual violence in global contexts. She co-founded the journal Transnational Cinemas (now Transnational Screens), authored books like The Three Amigos (2013), and co-edited collections on Guillermo del Toro and Latin American women filmmakers. Her work has been cited in international media outlets such as The Conversation, The Independent, and Newsweek.
