Hyon Joo Yoo is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at the University of Vermont’s College of Arts and Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. from Syracuse University (2007) and specializes in Film and Media Theory, Psychoanalysis (particularly Lacanian), Global and South Korean Cinema, Gender Studies, Asian Studies, and Critical Theory.
Her research interrogates the human condition through psychoanalytic frameworks, exploring how film articulates global questions of humanity. She teaches courses ranging from film history to transnational cinema, gender studies, and critical theory. Notable courses include South Korean Cinema, Gender and Sexuality in Film, and Transnational Auteurs.
Yoo has received numerous grants and awards, including the Peter Seybolt Faculty Fund (2017), Lattie F. Coor Faculty Awards in Humanities (2014, 2010), and multiple Faculty Development Grants across English and Asian Studies programs. She is affiliated with professional organizations like the American Comparative Literature Association and the Society for Cinema and Media Studies.
