Deborah Ryanf is a Professor of Architecture and Urban Design at the University of North Carolina Charlotte (UNC Charlotte), the first woman to hold this rank in the School of Architecture’s history. She has served as former Director of the Master of Urban Design program and co-founder of the Charlotte Community Design Studio (CCDS), raising over $1M to fund community-driven urban projects. Her work bridges academia and practice, emphasizing innovative community engagement and historic preservation.
Education: BEnvD in Landscape Architecture from North Carolina State University (1980s), MLA from Harvard University (1980s). Professional experience includes roles at the Freelon Group, SWA, and the Pebble Beach Company.
Research focuses on participatory urban design, cultural site revitalization, and digital placemaking. Notable projects include the Romare Bearden Park master plan and the Millennial Plan, engaging over 2,000 millennials in Charlotte’s urban visioning. Awards include the Distinguished Jane Jacobs Fellow (2022) and recognition as one of Charlotte’s Most Influential Women.
Leadership roles include Chair of Charlotte Mecklenburg Planning Commission and Board membership with the Arts & Science Council. She co-authored groundbreaking texts like Anarchist’s Guide to Historic House Museums and pioneered Wikiplanning, an interactive platform engaging 10,000+ users in urban planning.
