Deborah Potts is Professor of Human Geography in the Department of Geography at King's College London's Faculty of Social Science and Public Policy, where her work critically examines urban dynamics, housing crises, and development challenges across the Global South with particular emphasis on African cities.
Her research portfolio centers on Human Geography and Urban Studies, specializing in Housing Studies, Development Geography, and African Urbanism. She is renowned for her 2020 monograph Broken Cities: Inside the Global Housing Crisis, which analyzes systemic failures in urban housing provision through case studies from Zambia and other developing nations, revealing how neoliberal policies exacerbate spatial inequality and informality.
Professor Potts has supervised numerous graduate students and secured competitive research grants from UK funding bodies including the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and British Academy, supporting fieldwork on urban housing markets, informal settlements, and policy interventions in African contexts. Her methodological approach combines critical urban theory with rigorous empirical analysis of housing finance systems and land tenure regimes.
