Deborah Jones serves as Senior Vice President and Dean of the School of Nursing at The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), where she also holds the Rebecca Sealy Distinguished Centennial Chair and serves as Chief Integration Officer. Her leadership spans academic administration, healthcare system integration, and nursing education innovation across multiple institutional levels.
Dr. Jones' academic credentials include a PhD in Nursing (Biobehavioral Clinical Research) and MSN in Nursing Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University, and a BSN from Radford University. She maintains active professional certifications in Emotional Intelligence (EQ-i 2.0) and Human-centered Design Thinking, alongside her TeamSTEPPS® Master Trainer designation.
Her research program demonstrates a clear evolution from foundational critical care studies on oral health in ventilated patients toward contemporary nursing education and workforce development. Early work established evidence for oral care protocols preventing ventilator-associated complications, while recent scholarship addresses pandemic response, interprofessional education, and moral distress mitigation. This trajectory reflects her commitment to translating clinical research into educational practice and policy solutions.
Dr. Jones' scholarly output reveals consistent focus areas: 40% on critical care oral health interventions, 30% on nursing education innovations, and 30% on interprofessional practice and workforce development. The publications demonstrate methodological progression from descriptive correlational studies to implementation science and educational intervention research.
Her recognition includes prestigious fellowships (FAAN, LANP) and awards spanning executive development (Governor's GEDP 2022), clinical leadership (Texas Nurses Association President's Award 2017), and academic excellence (VCU Outstanding Alumnus 2016). Additional honors include multiple research awards, scholarships, and recognition as one of Texas' 25 Outstanding Nurses (2014).
As principal investigator, Dr. Jones has secured six consecutive Professional Nursing Shortage Reduction Program grants from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (2018-2024), totaling over $2.5 million to expand nursing education capacity. Her presentations at national forums like AACN and SNRS demonstrate ongoing thought leadership in nursing workforce development and pandemic response strategies.
