Deborah Harvey serves as Assistant Professor of Horn in Practice at Sam Houston State University and holds a core position with Theater Under The Stars orchestra. Her academic role focuses on horn performance pedagogy within the university's music program. With over 20 years of teaching experience across North America, she maintains an active dual career in both education and professional performance.
Harvey's educational foundation includes studies at Interlochen Center for the Arts, Northwestern University, and Rice University under distinguished instructors Gail Williams and William VerMeulen. This comprehensive training informs her approach to both performance and teaching.
Her professional expertise spans multiple performance domains:
- Horn performance techniques and pedagogy

- Opera and ballet orchestral performance
- Brass ensemble direction

As an active performer, Harvey contributes to several prominent ensembles including the Magnolia City Brass Band, Gulf Coast Brass, Houston Ballet orchestra, Houston Grand Opera orchestra, and River Oaks Chamber Orchestra. With two decades of experience coaching horn students across Canada and the United States, Harvey has developed a comprehensive approach to brass education that addresses both technical development and musical interpretation. Her mentorship extends beyond the classroom through masterclasses and festival appearances throughout North America.
