Deborah E Leckband

Deborah E Leckband is the Reid T. Milner Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, holding joint appointments in the School of Chemical Sciences, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Bioengineering, and Chemistry. Her research focuses on the biophysics of cell adhesion, biomaterials, and mechanotransduction at biological interfaces. She leads the Biosurfaces Laboratory, exploring how surface chemistry and mechanics influence cell behavior, with applications in drug delivery, tissue engineering, and medical devices.

Research Interests: Her work integrates surface science, biophysics, and cell biology to study protein interactions (e.g., cadherins), cell adhesion mechanics, and the design of smart biomaterials. Current projects include:

• Engineering cell microenvironments to control stem cell differentiation
• Mechano-chemical signaling in cancer metastasis and wound healing
• Design principles for non-fouling coatings and drug delivery systems
