University of Illinois Urbana-Champaignمعرفی
Deborah E. Leckband is the Reid T. Milner Professor of Chemical Sciences and Professor of Chemistry at the University of Illinois, affiliated with multiple institutes including the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology and the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology. Her research bridges biophysical chemistry and biomedical engineering, focusing on cell adhesion mechanics, biomaterials design, and mechanotransduction.
Education: B.S., Humboldt State University (1982); Ph.D., Cornell University (1988); postdoctorates at MIT and UC Santa Barbara (1988–1992).
Research interests include nanomechanics of biomolecules, cell adhesion dynamics, and tissue engineering. Key projects involve studying cadherin junctions, protein-material interactions, and mechano-transduction pathways in physiological and disease contexts. Her work has led to design criteria for non-fouling materials and drug delivery systems.
Notable achievements include developing molecular force probe techniques and discovering novel adhesion mechanisms in innate immunity. Her lab, the Biosurfaces Laboratory, collaborates across disciplines to address biotechnological challenges in health and materials science.
Awards include Fellowships from the Biomedical Engineering Society (2014), American Chemical Society (2009), and AAAS (2005). She has held named professorships since 2004.
