Deborah Casewell is an Associate Professor in Philosophy at the University of Chester, specializing in continental philosophy of religion, existentialism, and German Idealism. She serves as Co-Director of the AHRC-funded Simone Weil Research Network UK and previously held a Humboldt Research Fellowship at the University of Bonn. Her research explores intersections between philosophy, theology, and ethics, focusing on figures like Eberhard Jüngel, Simone Weil, and Karl Jaspers.
Educated at the University of Edinburgh (PhD), the University of Oxford (MSt), and with research stints at the University of Tübingen and the Institut Catholique de Paris, her work bridges existential thought, religious ethics, and continental philosophy. Key publications include Eberhard Jüngel and Existence (2021) and Monotheism and Existentialism (2022, Cambridge Elements).
Teaching interests span world philosophies, ethics, and theological ethics. Her funded projects include the AHRC-supported Simone Weil network. Awards include the Humboldt Research Fellowship.
