Deborah Carter is a faculty member at the Department of Pathology within the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia. Her research focuses on virology, epidemiology, and ecological health, with a particular emphasis on avian influenza and zoonotic disease transmission.
Her work spans HPAI H5N1 dynamics in wild birds, viral persistence in wetlands, and cross-species transmission studies in livestock and wildlife. Recent publications highlight her contributions to understanding influenza A virus (IAV) ecology, disease surveillance, and microfluidics-based bioreactors for stem cell culture.
Her research integrates field studies, experimental infections, and environmental sampling to address viral transmission mechanisms and wildlife health impacts. She collaborates with teams on epidemiological modeling, vector competence, and disease monitoring across diverse ecosystems.
