Jen Owen is an Associate Professor and avian disease ecologist at Michigan State University. Her research focuses on disease ecology in migratory birds, zoonotic disease transmission, and wildlife health conservation.
Owen investigates how environmental stressors, host-pathogen interactions, and migratory patterns influence disease dynamics in avian populations. Her work employs molecular techniques including transcriptome analysis, 16S rRNA sequencing, and viral load quantification to study birds such as mallards, blue-winged teals, and passerines. Research themes include West Nile virus evolution, avian influenza dynamics in waterfowl, and microbiome-pathogen interactions in migratory species.
Field studies span diverse ecosystems from Michigan wetlands to Jordanian stopover sites, examining how migration routes and stopover ecology affect disease transmission. Owen emphasizes science communication and public engagement, aiming to make ecological research accessible while training future scientists in disease ecology methodologies.
