Dr. Debabrata Chakravarti serves as the Anna Lapham Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Professor of Pharmacology at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. He holds key leadership roles including Vice Chair for Translational Research in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Associate Director of the Division of Reproductive Sciences in Medicine, and Assistant Director of Shared Resources at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center.
His academic journey began with a BS and MSc in Biochemistry from the University of Calcutta (1984, 1986), followed by an MS (1988) and PhD (1992) in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. His postdoctoral training occurred at The Salk Institute under Dr. Ronald Evans.
Dr. Chakravarti's research program centers on epigenetic and transcriptional mechanisms in human tumorigenesis, with three primary thrusts: investigating uterine fibroid development (affecting 70% of women), elucidating transcription factor/cofactor roles in prostate cancer, and defining protein cofactor functions in cell cycle regulation. His work bridges fundamental molecular biology and translational applications, employing cutting-edge epigenomic and bioinformatic approaches to identify novel therapeutic targets for globally impactful diseases.
Recent publications reveal strong trends in epigenomic dysregulation across gynecological cancers and treatment-resistant malignancies. His team's work connects mitochondrial metabolism vulnerabilities to MYC-driven cancers while establishing engineered cellular models for uterine fibroids that recapitulate leiomyoma epigenomic signatures. These studies demonstrate consistent focus on chromatin remodeling complexes and transcriptional networks in disease pathogenesis.
Scientific recognition includes:
- Anna Lapham Professorship in OBGYN (Northwestern University, 2020)
- Michael S. Brown Junior Faculty Research Award (University of Pennsylvania, 2003)
- Future Leader Award (International Life Sciences Institutes, 2000)
- Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund Post-doctoral fellowship (1994)
Dr. Chakravarti actively mentors the next generation of scientists through graduate teaching and thesis committee service, having trained numerous postdoctoral fellows and graduate students who now lead independent research programs. His laboratory receives substantial grant support including a $7.4 million NIH award for uterine fibroids research, reflecting the translational significance of his work on common women's health conditions.
He directs the Chakravarti Laboratory within the Center for Reproductive Science and Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center, fostering collaborative research that integrates molecular endocrinology, epigenomics, and cancer biology to address critical gaps in women's health and oncology.
