Deb Anderson is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Media, Film and Journalism at Monash University. She specializes in climate crisis communication, oral histories of weather disasters, and gendered perspectives on disaster reporting. Her role includes coordinating the Master of Arts (Research Training) program and co-convening the Gender and Media Lab, emphasizing inclusive interdisciplinary research.
Her research focuses on the cultural and historical dimensions of climate crisis, leveraging oral histories to inform policy and community resilience. She has secured competitive grants, including an ARC Discovery Project on journalism and trauma (2024–2027). Awards include nominations for Supervisor of the Year and recognition for her book Endurance: Australian Stories of Drought.
Teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate courses in journalism, including field schools in New York, Hong Kong, and London. She leads experiential learning initiatives, earning awards for teaching innovation.
Key projects include collaborations with institutions like Museum Victoria and First Nations journalists to document climate impacts and trauma in journalism. Ongoing work addresses the intersection of media, trauma, and community through historical and interdisciplinary lenses.
