Deanne Sowter is a doctoral candidate at Osgoode Hall Law School and an Adjunct Lecturer at Western Law. She holds a McCarthy Tetrault Fellowship in Professional Ethics at Queen’s University and has received the Vanier Scholarship for her research.
- Research focuses on legal ethics, family law, gender-based violence, feminist legal theory, tort law, and evidence law, with emphasis on lawyers’ ethics in relation to myths and stereotypes in family violence cases.
- Published in peer-reviewed journals such as the Windsor Yearbook of Access to Justice, Dalhousie Law Journal, and Child and Family Law Quarterly (UK), cited by the Supreme Court of Canada.
- Has taught legal ethics, dispute resolution, and family law courses at Calgary Law and Western Law, and will teach Advanced Family Law at Queen’s in 2024/25.
- Recipient of SSHRC funding and fellowships including the Estey Teaching Fellowship and OBA Foundation Chief Justice of Ontario Fellowship.
- Active in professional communities, delivering lectures and presenting her work at Queen’s Law Visiting Speaker Series and the Tort Law & Social Equality Project at the University of Toronto.
