Dayna Oscherwitz is a Professor of French at Southern Methodist University (SMU), serving concurrently as Associate Provost for Institutional Planning and Effectiveness. Her academic focus lies at the intersection of Francophone studies, African cinema, and postcolonial critique. She holds a Ph.D. in French Literature from the University of Texas at Austin.
Her research explores themes of globalization, human rights, and cultural identity through film analysis. Notable works include studies on Abderrahmane Sissako’s Timbuktu and Mahamet Saleh Haroun’s A Screaming Man, examining how cinema reframes narratives of conflict, migration, and socio-political dynamics in Africa and the Francophone world.
Oscherwitz has presented at major conferences such as the Society for Cinema and Media Studies and the African Studies Association Annual Meeting, addressing topics like ‘France and Islam’ and ‘Global Jihad in contemporary cinema.’ Her scholarship bridges literary analysis with visual media, emphasizing decolonial perspectives.
