Prof. Dayan Ban is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo and a member of the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto and B.A.Sc./M.A.Sc. degrees from the University of Science and Technology of China. His research focuses on optoelectronics, semiconductor quantum devices, terahertz quantum cascade lasers, nanotechnology, and energy harvesting via piezoelectric and triboelectric nanogenerators.
Key research contributions include pioneering work on terahertz quantum cascade lasers (QCLs), the first Canadian demonstration of THz QCLs in 2004, and breakthroughs in perovskite-based materials for high-efficiency energy harvesting. His group also developed novel scanning probe microscopy techniques for studying quantum devices in operating conditions.
Recent publications highlight advancements in piezoelectric nanogenerators using perovskite materials, achieving ultrahigh energy conversion efficiencies. His work spans journals like Nano Energy, ACS Energy Letters, and Nature Communications.
Ban has mentored numerous students and postdocs, with alumni advancing to roles in academia and industry. His lab facilities include advanced instrumentation like AFM, FTIR, and cryostats. He teaches courses in optoelectronics, nanotechnology, and photonics.
