Dawn Zimmerman is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases department at the Yale School of Public Health. She holds roles as Director of International Programs for the Veterinary Initiative for Endangered Wildlife, Research Associate at the Smithsonian Institution, and affiliate faculty at the University of Nairobi. Her career includes leadership positions such as Director of Wildlife Health for the Smithsonian’s Global Health Program and Regional Veterinary Manager for Gorilla Doctors.
Zimmerman earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Ross University and a Master of Science (MS) from San Diego State University, focusing on reproductive techniques in exotic canids. Her research emphasizes a One Health approach to endangered species conservation and mitigating zoonotic diseases at wildlife-human interfaces.
Her work spans over 15 countries, particularly in East Africa, including leading USAID’s PREDICT program to detect pathogens with pandemic potential. She collaborates with organizations like the IUCN Wildlife Health Specialist Group and serves on advisory boards for tapir conservation and elephant welfare.
Zimmerman’s publications address topics such as wildlife health surveillance, tick-borne diseases, and conservation strategies for endangered species. She actively contributes to global health initiatives through her roles in pandemic forecasting, veterinary medicine, and wildlife epidemiology.
