Davis R. Robinson is a Professor of Theater and Chair of the Theater and Dance Department at Bowdoin College. He holds an MFA from Boston University and a BA from Hampshire College. His research focuses on movement-based theater, Tennessee Williams, and innovative methods combining text and physicality in devising processes.
Robinson has over three decades of professional experience as an actor, director, and movement coach. He has directed productions at renowned venues like the Shakespeare Theater at Monmouth and the Theater Project in Brunswick. He is artistic director of the award-winning Beau Jest Moving Theater, touring nationally with works like Screwball and adaptations of Tennessee Williams.
His teaching emphasizes physical theater, improvisation, and ensemble creation, with courses such as THTR 1202 (Improvisation) and THTR 3201 (Theater Styles). His published works include A Practical Guide to Ensemble Devising (2015) and The Physical Comedy Handbook (1999).
Robinson collaborates with artists like Jacques Lecoq and Tony Montanaro, and has developed original works from films, novels, and current events. His recent projects include world premieres at the Provincetown Tennessee Williams Festival and a focus on 'forgotten American plays.'
