David Y. Son is a Full Professor at Southern Methodist University (SMU) since 2013, previously serving as Associate Professor (2002–2013) and Assistant Professor (1996–2002). He holds a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from MIT (1993) and a B.S. in Chemistry from Andrews University (1989). His research focuses on polymer synthesis, including polyarylenes for high-temperature applications, degradable/non-degradable polymers for drug delivery, and click chemistry methodologies like thiol-ene reactions.
His scientific achievements include awards such as the SMU 'M' Award (2017), Thomas A. Tunks Citizenship Award (2015), and multiple HOPE honors. He teaches courses like General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Advanced Inorganic Chemistry. His group actively explores semi-fluorinated polyarylenes, microwave-assisted synthesis, and additive manufacturing with medical-grade silicones.
Key research areas span polymer design for biomedical and industrial applications, with a focus on material properties and synthesis innovation. Collaborations include work on medical-grade silicone elastomers and IR laser curing techniques.
