David Womersley is the Thomas Warton Professor of English Literature and Professorial Fellow at St Catherine's College, University of Oxford. His research focuses on the ‘long eighteenth century,’ with expertise in historiography, colonial literature, and the works of Edward Gibbon and Jonathan Swift. He has held academic roles since 1984, including Tutorial Fellow at Jesus College, Oxford, and has been recognized with fellowships from the British Academy and C.F. von Siemens Stiftung.

Research interests span Edward Gibbon’s historiography, the concept of barbarism in Western thought, and the interplay of literature with colonialism and economics. Current projects include editing the 26-volume Writings and Correspondence of Edward Gibbon and leading the Thomas Hollis Library series on early modern political thought.
Teaching includes courses on 'English Representations of India' and 'Literature of Colonialism and Empire.' Supervised research areas include Catholic writing, philosophic historiography, and literature-economics intersections in the 18th century.
Awards and affiliations include collaborations with the University of Lausanne, LMU Munich, and the C.F. von Siemens Stiftung. He remains active in editorial work, historical analysis, and academic leadership.
