Dr. David Wohl is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine. He serves as Co-Principal Investigator of the UNC Infectious Diseases Clinical Research Trials Unit and Co-Director of the UNC Viral Hemorrhagic Fever Research Group. Additionally, he is an Investigator for the UNC COVID-19 Clinical Research Response.
Dr. Wohl's research spans several critical areas:
- Novel approaches to HIV treatment and prevention
- Aging and HIV infection
- Emerging infectious diseases including viral hemorrhagic fevers (Ebola, Lassa fever)
- SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 research and response
His scholarly work demonstrates significant expertise at the intersection of HIV and cardiovascular health, viral hemorrhagic fevers, and clinical management of emerging infectious diseases. Recent publications highlight his leadership in clinical trials addressing cardiovascular complications in HIV patients and therapeutic approaches for viral infections including SARS-CoV-2, particularly through the REPRIEVE trial examining pitavastatin for cardiovascular disease prevention.
Dr. Wohl has served two terms on the US Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Antiretroviral Guidelines Panel. Since 2014, he has conducted continuous research in Liberia, West Africa, focusing on Ebola survivors and establishing the UNC Project Liberia research platform. His work has expanded to include Lassa fever research. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he led UNC's clinical response as medical director of testing and vaccination sites, and as Vice Chair of the international ACTIV-2 trial of SARS-CoV-2 therapeutics.
Dr. Wohl maintains an active clinical practice at UNC while leading multiple research initiatives addressing critical infectious disease challenges, bridging the gap between clinical care and research translation.
