David Watson is a Professor of Ecology at the Gulbali Institute, affiliated with the School of Agriculture, Environmental and Veterinary Sciences. He holds academic roles including Associate Editor of Austral Ecology, board member of the Great Eastern Ranges Initiative, and chair of the School's research committee. His research focuses on biodiversity management in agricultural landscapes, habitat fragmentation impacts, and parasitic plant ecology. Watson completed a PhD in Ecology at the University of Kansas (1999) and a BSc (Honours 1) at Monash University (1994). He leads projects on mistletoe's ecological roles, acoustic monitoring of birds, and feral horse management. His work bridges theoretical and applied ecology, with recent contributions to the Australian Acoustic Observatory and advocacy for invasive species control.
- Education: PhD, Ecology (University of Kansas, 1999); BSc (Monash University, 1994)
- Research Interests: Connectivity conservation, parasitic plant ecology, biodiversity survey methods, habitat restoration
Watson’s research demonstrates mistletoe’s keystone role in ecosystems and links bird declines to soil health. He collaborates with regional bodies like Slopes to Summit Partnership and Wirraminna Environmental Education Centre. Recent work includes genomic repercussions of landscape modification, acoustic-based species abundance estimation, and urban wildlife habitat connectivity. Grants include projects on wetland bird distribution monitoring and secretive bird ecology. His advocacy extends to feral horse control and conservation technology integration.
