Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciencesمعرفی
David W. Scott is Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, MD. He has held this position since September 2010, following previous appointments at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Holland Lab of the American Red Cross, University of Rochester, and Duke University.
Dr. Scott's educational background includes:
- Biology from Antioch College (1960-1963)
- MS in Microbiology from University of Chicago (1964)
- Ph.D. in Immunology from Yale University (1969)
- Post-doctoral fellowship at Oxford University (1970-1972)
Dr. Scott's research focuses on translational immunology, specifically targeting adverse immune responses to achieve immunologic tolerance in hemophilia and autoimmune diseases. His laboratory work centers on engineering regulatory T cells for therapeutic applications, with particular emphasis on developing gene therapy approaches to induce tolerance. His research spans fundamental immunology mechanisms and their clinical applications, bridging the gap between basic science and patient care. Over his career, he has contributed to over 200 research papers and authored two textbooks, including "The Nature of Immunologic Tolerance."
Analysis of Dr. Scott's recent publications reveals a strong focus on regulatory T cells in autoimmune conditions, particularly multiple sclerosis and hemophilia. His work combines molecular immunology with therapeutic development, showing a progression from basic tolerance mechanisms to engineered cellular therapies. There's a clear trend toward translational research with direct clinical implications, especially in the areas of hemophilia treatment and multiple sclerosis interventions.
Dr. Scott has received numerous prestigious awards for his contributions to immunology and hemophilia research:
- Distinguished Service Award from the American Association of Immunologists (2004)
- Boerhaave Professorship at Leiden University Medical School, The Netherlands (2006)
- Scientific Achievement Award from the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (2009)
- Distinguished Fellow of American Association of Immunologists (2022)
- Hemophilia Researcher of the Year Award (2019)
- Henry C. Wu Award for Excellence in Basic Science Research (2018)
Dr. Scott has been actively involved in numerous research projects funded by major organizations including the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and American Heart Association. His current projects focus on bispecific antibodies to target FVIII-specific B cells, engineering human CNS-specific T regulatory cells, and mechanisms of tolerance induction to FVIII in hemophilia. He has served on editorial boards of major immunologic journals and as a member of study sections for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and NIH.
Dr. Scott leads a research laboratory focused on translational immunology, with current work centered on engineering regulatory T cells for application in autoimmune diseases and hemophilia. His team collaborates with researchers across institutions to develop novel therapeutic approaches for inducing immunologic tolerance, with particular emphasis on cellular engineering and gene therapy techniques.
