Dr. David Tumbarello is a Lecturer in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Southampton. His research focuses on cell biology, particularly mechanisms of membrane trafficking, autophagy, and mitochondrial quality control. He leads the Tumbarello Lab, investigating subcellular trafficking pathways and their roles in diseases like cancer and neurodegeneration.
Education includes a PhD in Anatomy and Cell Biology (SUNY Upstate Medical University, 2006) and BSc in Biochemistry (Binghamton University, 1999). He has held roles including Postdoctoral Fellow (Cancer Research UK, Cambridge) and Research Associate (CIMR, Cambridge).
Teaching responsibilities include coordinating the Cancer and Chromosome Biology module and leading the Biochemistry undergraduate program. External roles include editorial board memberships for Scientific Reports and Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, and council membership at The Biochemical Society.
Key research projects include investigating mitochondrial-derived vesicles in Parkinson’s disease and mechanisms of mitophagy. His lab employs siRNA, CRISPR-Cas9, biochemical assays, and advanced imaging to study cargo trafficking and degradation pathways.
