David Takacs is a Professor of Law at the University of California Hastings College of the Law. He holds a J.D. from Hastings, an LL.M. in International Law from the School of Oriental & African Studies (University of London), and a Ph.D. in Science & Technology Studies from Cornell University. His research focuses on biodiversity conservation law, environmental democracy, rights of nature, and the human right to water. He has authored The Idea of Biodiversity and advised international NGOs and U.S. agencies on REDD+ and climate policy. In 2017, he received the Rutter Award for Outstanding Teaching.
Before his legal career, Takacs was a professor of Earth Systems Science & Policy at CSU Monterey Bay, a lecturer at Cornell University, and a Peace Corps Forestry Volunteer in Senegal. His courses include Environmental Law, International Environmental Law, and Climate Change Law.
His scholarship spans over 30 years, addressing topics such as climate adaptation (Adapting to a 4℃ World), legal frameworks for ecosystems (Standing for Rivers), and biodiversity offsets (An Aye Aye for an Aye Aye). His work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, integrating legal, ecological, and social justice perspectives.
