Dr. David T Bain is a Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Glasgow. His work focuses on pain's hedonistic character, perceptual content, and externalist psychosemantics. He has led major interdisciplinary projects like the £362,000 Templeton-funded 'Value of Suffering Project' (2013–2016) and the 'Pain Project' (2012–2013). His research spans pain's unpleasantness, motivational force, and affective experience, collaborating with neuroscientists, psychologists, and clinicians internationally. He is an editor for key texts like Philosophy of Pain (2018) and supervises doctoral students in philosophy of mind and language. Bain teaches courses on philosophy of mind, language, and externalism at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
His research interests include pain’s dual nature (unpleasantness vs. life-saving utility), hedonic tone in sensory experiences (e.g., smell, emotion), and perceptual revelation. He critiques traditional distinctions between primary/secondary qualities and explores phenomenal character in perception. His recent work addresses the normative and motivational roles of pain and pleasure across disciplines.
Publications span over 20 articles, including landmark pieces on pain’s motivational force (Noûs, 2019), pain without unpleasantness (Philosophers' Magazine, 2016), and the imperative view of pain (Journal of Consciousness Studies, 2011). He has authored book reviews on embodied cognition and pain methodology, reflecting his commitment to bridging philosophical analysis with empirical science.
Bain’s grants and collaborations highlight interdisciplinary impact, fostering global discussions on suffering’s value and pain’s ethical implications. His teaching focuses on rigorous engagement with externalist theories, knowledge, and inferential reasoning, maintaining a balance between foundational philosophy and contemporary issues.
