Professor David Stirrup joined the University of York in 2023, bringing over two decades of expertise in English, American, and Indigenous Studies. He previously held positions at the University of Kent and earned his PhD in English and American Literature from the University of Leeds. Stirrup is a founding co-editor of the open-access journal Transmotion, which focuses on global Indigenous writing, and established Europe’s first Centre for Indigenous and Settler Colonial Studies at Kent in 2019, relocating its hub to York.
His research spans Indigenous literatures, colonialism, and cultural intersections, exemplified by his monographs on Louise Erdrich and Anishinaabe literature, as well as co-edited works on themes like the Canada-US border and Native American representation. He leads major funded projects, including AHRC-supported initiatives on Indigenous Knowledges and Métis global identity, and has collaborated with institutions in the UK, US, Canada, and NGOs such as Incomindios UK.
Stirrup teaches undergraduate courses in American and Canadian literature, alongside global Indigenous literatures. He is also involved in interdisciplinary projects like the AHRC-ESRC funded exploration of anti-colonial water geographies via geopoetics.
