David Robertson is a distinguished American conductor, composer, and educator who serves as Director of Conducting Studies and Distinguished Visiting Faculty at The Juilliard School in New York. He has held significant artistic leadership positions including Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Music Director of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National de Lyon, BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Ensemble InterContemporain. Robertson also serves on the Tianjin Juilliard Advisory Council and recently completed a three-year tenure as Creative Partner of Utah Symphony | Utah Opera.
Robertson's research interests focus on contemporary music, particularly 20th and 21st century repertoire, with deep expertise in spectral music and works by composers like Boulez, Grisey, and Reich. His scholarly work examines rhythmic structures in contemporary music, the compositional techniques of Janáček, and the interpretation of complex modern scores. As both a conductor and composer, Robertson brings a unique dual perspective to musical interpretation.
His recent compositions include 'Whorls and Eddies' (premiered by LA Phil in 2024) and 'Light forming' - a piano concerto (premiered in 2022).
