David Rathgeber serves as Assistant Professor and Lab Director in the Department of Petroleum Engineering at Montana Technological University's Lance College of Mines & Engineering, managing laboratories for both Petroleum and Environmental Engineering programs.
His educational path includes a technologist diploma from Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering from Montana Tech, and a Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering focused on experimental flow loop design for studying drill string rotation effects. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Materials Science & Engineering.
Rathgeber's research centers on drill pipe rotation effects on cuttings transport in horizontal/high-angle wells, particularly large-diameter extended reach wellbores, employing empirical data combined with computer modeling to analyze flow regime changes and transport mechanisms. His work spans drilling engineering innovation with sustainability applications in petroleum extraction processes.
He actively mentors students as advisor for the Montana Tech Student SPE chapter and serves as Vice President for the Montana Tech Digger Hockey Club, while also chairing the Head Start Policy Council.
Teaching responsibilities include PET 446 (Petroleum Project Evaluation), PET 453 (Petroleum Production Lab), and EENV 243 (Environmental Sampling), leveraging over 6 years of international field experience in drilling and completions across Canada and Mexico.
