David Primrose is a Lecturer in Health Policy and Planning at the University of Sydney, where he serves as Course Coordinator for the Master of Health Policy and Planning program. He is affiliated with the Leeder Centre for Health Policy, Economics and Data within the Sydney School of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine and Health, and is also a member of the Sydney Centre for Healthy Societies.
Dr. Primrose's research spans the political economy of health and healthcare, with particular focus on neoliberalism, critical analyses of behavioral economics, and the intersection of food systems, obesity, and health policy. His work critically examines how contemporary capitalism shapes health outcomes and healthcare systems, with attention to global governance structures, ideological formations, and alternative social arrangements. He has developed significant expertise in post-political theory and its implications for health policy formation.
His extensive publication record includes co-editing three major handbooks: The Routledge Handbook of the Political Economy of Health and Healthcare (2024), Handbook of Alternative Theories of Political Economy (2022), and The SAGE Handbook of Neoliberalism (2018). His recent scholarship has critically analyzed the political economic dimensions of the COVID-19 pandemic, neoliberal responses to health crises, and the limitations of behavioral economics approaches to complex health issues like obesity.
