David Poulson serves as Senior Associate Director of the Knight Center for Environmental Journalism at Michigan State University's College of Communication Arts and Sciences. He joined MSU in 2003 after more than two decades as a professional reporter and editor focused on environmental coverage, including 12 years as environment reporter for Michigan's Booth Newspaper chain capital bureau. Poulson teaches environmental, investigative, public affairs and data analysis reporting while organizing workshops internationally to enhance environmental journalism practices.
His educational foundation includes graduating from MSU's School of Journalism in 1982 before returning as faculty. He employs innovative tools including drones, satellite imagery, and GIS in his teaching methodology, reflecting his commitment to advancing journalism techniques.
Poulson's research focuses on non-traditional story forms, mechanisms for reader engagement, and improving scientists' communication capabilities. His work bridges scientific research and public understanding of critical environmental issues through innovative reporting approaches that engage diverse audiences with complex environmental challenges.
His significant contributions to environmental journalism have been recognized with multiple prestigious awards:
- Jack Vallentyne Award (2015) for sustained efforts to inform and educate the public and policymakers on Great Lakes issues
- Knight-Batten Journalism Award (2007) for Great Lakes Wiki's innovation in journalism
- Great Laker Award (2011) for excellence in environmental reporting through Great Lakes Echo
Poulson has founded three major environmental news services: Great Lakes Environmental Wire (1995), Great Lakes Wiki (2007), and Great Lakes Echo (current), plus The Food Fix covering global food security. He serves on the Society of Environmental Journalists board and advisory boards for Michigan Sea Grant and MSU's Environmental Science and Policy Program, while contributing to the university's Global Water Initiative committee.
