David Planchard is a distinguished thoracic oncologist at Gustave Roussy Cancer Campus and holds the position of Associate Professor at University of Paris-Saclay. He serves as a key member of the Genetic Adaptation to Kinase Inhibitors team within the Molecular Predictors and New Targets in Oncology unit (PMNCO), a collaborative effort between University of Paris-Saclay, the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm), and Gustave Roussy. Since 2018, he has coordinated patient care as head of the thoracic pathology committee and leads a multidisciplinary team. Additionally, he serves as President of the International Center for Thoracic Cancers (CICT), a health cooperation group uniting Gustave Roussy with Marie-Lannelongue and Paris Saint-Joseph Hospitals.
Dr. Planchard began his medical education at Paris-Ouest Faculty of Medicine, completing an inter-CHU internship at Gustave Roussy. He defended his medical thesis on pulmonary metastases of breast cancer before undertaking two years of clinical training in pneumo-oncology at Poitiers University Hospital. In 2007, he obtained the European University Diploma in Translational and Clinical Research in Oncology from University of Paris-Saclay and completed a thesis on DNA repair factors in lung tumor cells at Gustave Roussy.
Dr. Planchard's research focuses on characterizing genetic anomalies in lung cancers to improve targeted therapies. He has become a specialist in BRAF V600E mutation, present in 2-3% of lung cancer patients, and pioneered dual blockade therapy targeting both BRAF and MEK proteins, which became the global standard by 2019. His work extends to liquid biopsies for identifying oncogenic mutations from circulating tumor DNA, with the STING clinical trial currently underway. He collaborates with Françoise Farace's team on identifying circulating tumor cells and is developing new antibody-drug conjugates that deliver chemotherapy directly to tumor cells while sparing healthy tissue.
- Highly Cited Scientist (2020-2025)
As both a clinician and researcher, Dr. Planchard has led multiple international clinical trials, including the first human administration of third-generation anti-EGFR inhibitors and successive cohorts for BRAFV600E anomaly patients. His work with the French Cooperative Thoracic Intergroup (IFCT) has significantly advanced treatment protocols. His leadership extends to the International Center for Thoracic Cancers, where he fosters international collaboration in thoracic oncology research and treatment.
Dr. Planchard works within the Molecular Predictors and New Targets in Oncology unit at Gustave Roussy, leading a multidisciplinary team focused on characterizing genetic anomalies in lung cancers. His laboratory research complements his clinical work, particularly in the areas of circulating tumor DNA analysis and the development of next-generation targeted inhibitors. The STING clinical trial currently represents a major focus of his research team's efforts to define molecular profiles and tailor treatments for individual patients.
