Benjamin Besse is Professor of Medical Oncology at Université Paris-Saclay and Head of Clinical Research at Gustave Roussy. He specializes in managing thoracic cancers with research focusing on molecular abnormalities for personalized treatment, circulating biomarkers, and early drug development in thoracic tumors and thymic malignancies.
His research interests include the application of molecular abnormalities to personalize cancer treatment, circulating biomarkers, early drug development in thoracic tumors, and thymic malignancies. He pioneered the first multidisciplinary Molecular Tumour Board (MTB) on lungs in 2010 and has been instrumental in developing liquid biopsy approaches to replace tissue biopsy for identifying molecular cancer anomalies. His work also focuses on understanding markers of sensitivity to immunotherapy, particularly in relation to immunosenescence profiles, digestive microbiota, and tumor micro-environment.
Benjamin Besse coordinates the French Network for Thymic Malignancies (RYTHMIC) and previously chaired the lung group of the European Organisation For Research And Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) from 2015 to 2021. He has implemented innovative approaches to mentor young researchers, including pairing experienced researchers with those under 40 for clinical trials.

Throughout his career, Besse has been deeply committed to translational research that bridges laboratory findings with clinical applications. He emphasizes the importance of collaborative work across disciplines, working closely with multiple research laboratories including the Laboratory for Immunomonitoring in Oncology (LIO), the Tumour Immunology and Cancer Immunotherapy Laboratory (ITIC), and the Integrative Tumour Immunology and Immunotherapy (INTIM) research unit. His approach to patient care centers on the strong bond formed when patients trust their lives to medical professionals, driving his commitment to deliver the best possible care.
