David Pires is an active researcher and Invited Assistant Professor at the University of Lisbon, affiliated with the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Health (CIIS). His work focuses on the complex interactions between humans and microbes, particularly in the context of tuberculosis and HIV infections.
- PhD in Interference of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis with the Endocytic/antigen Presentation Pathways on Macrophages and Dendritic Cells (University of Lisbon, 2014)
- Master in Role of mycobacteria porins and efflux pumps on the intracellular survival within macrophages (University of Lisbon, 2010)
Pires' research centers on developing host-directed strategies to improve immune responses against microbial pathogens, with particular focus on macrophages, dendritic cells, and T-cells. His work also involves screening for new antimicrobial molecules and drug delivery strategies to combat drug-resistant strains. His fingerprint reveals strong expertise in Mycobacterium Tuberculosis (100%), Macrophage biology (74%), Infectious Agents (52%), and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (34%).
His recent publications show a consistent focus on tuberculosis and HIV co-infection, with particular emphasis on host-pathogen interactions, protease inhibitors, novel antimicrobial compounds, and 3D granuloma models. The research demonstrates a clear trajectory toward developing innovative therapeutic approaches that target both pathogen and host factors.

Pires serves as Principal Investigator on multiple research projects, including 'Establishing an independent research laboratory in the fields of biomedical sciences or translational medicine' (2022-2028) and 'Whole genome screen for antigen processing and presentation: Improving vaccine efficacy' (2023). His activities include numerous examinations, supervisions, and invited talks, demonstrating active engagement in academic mentoring and knowledge dissemination. His research contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being.
