David Patton is the Joanne Toor Cummings '50 Professor of Government and International Relations at Connecticut College, where he has been a faculty member since 1993. He specializes in comparative politics, European politics, and Federal Republic of Germany studies, teaching courses on the European Union, nationalism, populism, and German politics.

His research focuses on German party politics, political regionalism, and foreign policy. Recent publications examine the Ukraine War's impact on German intraparty conflict, pandemic politics in the Federal Republic, and small party dynamics in the 2021 Bundestag election. Earlier work includes studies on the transformation of the Party of Democratic Socialism and Cold War legacies in Germany.
Patton has held prestigious fellowships, including a U.S. Fulbright Scholarship at Europa-University Viadrina (2014), a Berlin Program Fellowship, and a Friedrich Ebert Foundation grant. He co-directed the SATA program in Hanoi, Vietnam (2003), demonstrating a commitment to global academic engagement.
