David Pannell is a Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of Western Australia (UWA), within the UWA School of Agriculture and Environment. He also serves as Co-Director of the UWA Centre for Environmental Economics and Policy. His expertise spans environmental and agricultural economics, natural resource management, and policy design. He holds a BSc(Agric), BEc, and PhD from the University of Western Australia.
His research focuses on environmental policy, risk management, adoption of agricultural innovations, and bioeconomic modeling, with a particular emphasis on dryland salinity, threatened species management, and decision-support frameworks. He has contributed to over 300 publications, including influential works on the INFFER investment framework and benefit-cost analysis.
Recent articles highlight his work on energy policy polarisation, non-market valuation impacts, and urban sustainability. His contributions have earned prestigious awards, such as the ARC Eureka Prize for Interdisciplinary Research (2009) and the AAEA Fellowship (2020). He actively collaborates with organizations like Land and Water Australia and the Bushfire and Natural Hazard CRC.
Prof. Pannell’s grants include major projects on resilient landscapes, water-sensitive cities, and adoption prediction tools (ADOPT). He teaches courses on environmental economics and benefit-cost analysis, emphasizing practical applications in policy and management.
