David Owen is a Visiting Professor at the School of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) from September 2024 to July 2025. His current project, On Not Being at Home in the World, explores displacement and home-making in ethical and political contexts. He holds a Ph.D. (1989) and B.Sc. (1985) from Durham University.
- Affiliations: University of Southampton (primary), Goethe University Frankfurt, and others.
- Appointments: Full Professor of Social and Political Philosophy (University of Southampton, 2008–present), multiple visiting roles globally since 2000, and part-time lecturing positions in the 1990s.
His research focuses on political theory, philosophy, and migration studies, with a recent emphasis on ethical dimensions of displacement. Awards include Fellowships from the British Academy (2023) and the Academy of Social Sciences (2020).
Prior roles include Senior Lecturer, Reader, and Lecturer positions at Southampton and other UK institutions, alongside DAAD-funded visiting professorships in Germany.
