Dr. David O'Reilly is a Lecturer in Education (Research and Teaching) at the University of York's Department of Education since 2022. Previously, he held roles as Lecturer (2021–2022) and Associate Lecturer (2017–2021). His academic journey includes a PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of York (2013–2017), an MA in Applied Linguistics (2012–2013), and a BA in English Language and Literature from the University of Manchester (2003–2006).
His research focuses on metaphoric competence in first and second languages, language play/creativity, test design, and quantitative methods. He leads projects like OASIS (Open Accessible Summaries in Language Studies) and contributed to the IRIS repository for second language research materials. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and holds editorial roles, including Review Editor at Metaphor and the Social World.
