David Nienhuis is a Professor of New Testament at Seattle Pacific University (SPU), affiliated with Seattle Pacific Seminary. He holds a BA from SPU (1990), MDiv from Duke University (1996), and PhD from the University of Aberdeen (Scotland). His academic journey includes adjunct roles (1998–2001) before joining SPU full-time in 2004. Nienhuis specializes in New Testament studies, focusing on canon formation, biblical theology, and their intersection with church history, doctrine, and Christian formation. He teaches courses in the University Foundations program, New Testament studies, and Christian Reconciliation. His research examines the purpose and historical development of the Christian biblical canon, emphasizing its interpretive and formative significance for the church.
Dr. Nienhuis is a prolific author, publishing books such as A Concise Guide to Reading the New Testament (2018), The Usefulness of Scripture (2018), and Not By Paul Alone (2007). These works explore canonical collections’ theological coherence, early Christian hermeneutics, and the role of non-Pauline letters. His scholarship bridges historical criticism and practical theology, aiming to deepen Christian discipleship through canonical literacy.
Teaching at SPU, he emphasizes community care and the integration of faith with academic rigor. His contributions extend to collaborative projects like A Compact Guide to the Whole Bible (2015), which offers an accessible introduction to Scripture. Nienhuis is married to an SPU alumna, and they have two school-age children.
