David Newhouse is a Professor of Indigenous Studies at Trent University, serving as the first Principal of Peter Gzowski College and Chair of the Chanie Wenjack School for Indigenous Studies since 1993. He holds dual appointments in the School of Business and teaches in the Graduate CED Program at Concordia University. His leadership roles include Co-Chair of the Trent Aboriginal Education Council and Science Officer for the Aboriginal Peoples Health Research Adjudication Committee (CIHR). Professor Newhouse’s research focuses on modern Aboriginal society, with specializations in economic development, urban Aboriginal issues, and health. He has authored/co-authored numerous books and journals, including the foundational CANDO Journal of Aboriginal Economic Development. His professional service spans roles such as Policy Team Member on Economics for the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples and National Director of the SSHRC ‘Urban Aboriginal Research Network.’
His scholarly contributions emphasize Indigenous economic strategies, health equity, and policy frameworks for urban Aboriginal communities. Notable projects include leading the CIHR Poverty Action Research Project with the Eabametoong First Nation and co-directing the Ontario-Quebec region of the SSHRC network with Kevin Fitzmaurice. Newhouse’s work bridges academic research with community action, addressing topics like cultural preservation, health disparities, and national policy reform.
He has held key administrative roles, including President of the Trent University Faculty Association and Grievance Officer. His affiliations include the National Aboriginal Economic Development Board and the AFN Chief’s Committee on Ending Aboriginal Poverty. His interdisciplinary approach integrates sociology, public policy, and Indigenous knowledge systems to foster resilient communities.
