David N. Weil is the James and Meryl Tisch Professor of Economics at Brown University, where he has been since 1990. He holds a B.A. in History from Brown University (1982) and a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University. His primary research focuses on economic growth, demographic economics, and health's role in development. He is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research since 1997 and has held visiting professorships at Hebrew University and Harvard University.
Weil’s research explores income disparities between countries, the impact of health on economic outcomes, and demographic shifts like aging populations. His influential work includes the 1992 paper on economic growth determinants (with Mankiw and Romer) and studies on malaria’s historical effects in Africa. He authored the widely used textbook *Economic Growth* (2005). His recent work examines iodine deficiency’s cognitive impacts and spatial economic growth measurement using satellite data.
Award-winning but with no formal honors listed, Weil teaches courses on inequality, growth, and macroeconomics. He collaborates with scholars like Oded Galor and focuses on policy-relevant topics such as retirement behavior, technology transfer, and the long-term effects of public health interventions.
